Sheet Vinyl Flooring Installation

Installing sheet vinyl flooring is simple, efficient, and suitable for both DIY enthusiasts and professionals. Depending on the surface of your subfloor and the type of backing (PVC or textile) we recommend one of three installation methods: loose lay, semi loose lay, or fully glued installation. Always make sure to read the full installation instructions carefully before starting the installation.

Loose Lay Installation

Loose lay is a floating installation method in which the flooring is not fixed to the subfloor. It is recommended for:

  • PVC-backed flooring up to a maximum surface area of 20 m²
  • Textile-backed flooring up to a maximum surface area of 45 m²

Semi-loose Lay Installation

A partially fixed installation method using double-sided tape for extra stability and seam support. It is suitable for PVC-backed flooring with a surface area between 20 m² and 45 m².

Glued Installation

A glued installation method is recommended when the sheet vinyl flooring has a PVC backing and the surface area is more than 45 m².

Loose Lay Installation: Step-By-Step Guide

STEP 1 - Cut lengths with 5-10 cm excess in function of seams (double-cut method). If so, allow added excess up to the top of the skirt / cove.

STEP 2 - Unroll the lengths and place in position, respecting the direction / orientation shown on the roll label (do not look at the arrow on the back of the sheet vinyl).

STEP 3 - Install, avoiding bubbles, compression and tension. Avoid seams on joints. Create relief cuts in the vinyl to fit around remaining furniture such as toilet, bath, kitchen isle…

STEP 4 - Trim to size. Once placed into the final position into the room, foresee margin of 2-3 mm for skirting boards, this to avoid buckling or allow for normal movement of the sheet vinyl floor covering. When installing wall to wall without skirting, 1mm margin is needed to compensate for seasonal movement.

STEP 5 - Check seams are butted together neatly. Do not compress the seams as this will cause tension. If the flooring is not perfectly flat and there are bubbles, this means that there is tension between the flooring and a fixed point. In this case, we need to determine the source of the problem. Then, using a cork press, work from the bubble towards the fixed point and adjust the size of the flooring to release the tension. Doubles-sided tape at seams is mandatory as soon as there is a decision to weld.

STEP 6 - To remove bubbles, use a cork press. Work from the center of the lengths towards the edge.

STEP 7 - Clean the floor covering only with a light humid mob to prepare for finishing and visual inspection.

Semi-Loose Lay Installation: Step-By-Step Guide

STEP 1 - Upon need tape corners, heating ventilation and furniture surroundings with double sided tape without overlapping or double pasting the tape. Cut lengths with 5-10 cm excess in function of seams (double-cut method). In case of sheet vinyl skirts, foresee an added excess up to the level of the vinyl skirt.

STEP 5 - Carefully bend back half of the lengths to prepare for the application of the double-sided tape adhesive around the walls. Foresee the double-sided tape is positioned at the borders of the vinyl lengths, to support the seams. Remove the protection film of the tape for 30-40 cm starting from the room sides. Place half of your bended lengths on the adhesive tape into position. Reposition the lengths, press on and secure to the tape. Ensure the main area of installation remains flat and smooth.

STEP 6 - Repeat step 5 for the other half of the lengths.

STEP 7 - Check seams are butted together neatly. Do not compress the seams as this will cause tension. Doubles sided tape at seams is mandatory as soon as there is a decision to weld.

STEP 8 - To remove bubbles, use a cork press or sweep. Work from the center of the lengths towards the edge.

STEP 9 - Clean the floor covering only with a light humid mob to prepare for finishing and visual inspection.

Glued Installation: Step-By-Step Guide

STEP 1 - Cut lengths with 5-10 cm excess in function of seams (double-cut method). If so, allow added excess up to the top of the skirt / cove.

STEP 2 - Unroll the lengths and place in position, respecting the direction / orientation showed on the roll label.

STEP 3 - Install, avoiding bubbles, compression and tension. Avoid seams on subfloor joints. Create relief cuts in the vinyl to fit around the remaining furniture such as toilet, bath, kitchen islands, fixed furniture, etc.

STEP 4 - Trim to size. Once placed into the final position into the room, foresee margin of maximum 1 mm for skirting boards, this to avoid buckling / bubbling and to allow for normal movement of the sheet vinyl floor covering.

STEP 5 - Carefully bend back half of the sheet to prepare for the application of the adhesive to the subfloor. Spread the right amount of adhesive, with a correct size notched trowel, equally over the subfloor. After applying the adhesive and by the instructions, allow the adhesive to partially dry (open time) until it reaches its bonding strength. When the flooring is placed into the adhesive, if the adhesive is too wet, with time, released gases will cause bubbles or bad adhesion with the vinyl. When in a humid climate, ensure adhesive open time, drying or curing time is sufficient (moisture evaporation time is extended in humid environments). Replace the folded back half of the sheet on the adhesive and into position.

STEP 6 - Repeat step 5 for the other half of the length.

STEP 7 - To remove bubbles, use a cork press. Work from the center of the sheet towards the edge. Use a link roller or sweep to flatten the adhesive and ensure full adhesive transfer to the underside of the sheet vinyl before the adhesive has cured. Remove excess of adhesive at once with a damp towel.

STEP 8 - Clean the floor covering only with a light damp mop to prepare for finishing and visual inspection.

Glued Installation for Wet Rooms

You can install sheet vinyl in wet rooms such as a bathroom, but it cannot be used as a shower floor or wall covering.
